| Best known for being
half of the musical comedy team, The Smothers
Brothers, with his brother, Tom Smothers. Dick was
born in New York City, and after moving to Southern
California, attended high school in Redondo Beach and
college at San Jose State.
The Smothers
Brothers appeared on numerous television shows over
the past three decades, including two variety shows of
their own, The Smothers Brothers Show from 1965 to
1966, and The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1967.
Dick
also had a great racing career, beginning with the Jim
Russell Driving School at Willow Springs in 1967. Then
came sponsorship of a Lola T70 in the Can Am,
purchase of a Brabbam BT21 and formation of a team
with Dr. Lou Sell and a new Eagle Chevy; winning the
Formula A Championship.
The
following year he entered the Sebring 12 Hour in a
Porsche 906 and drove to an eighth place over-all
finish, first in the under 2-liter
category, and first of the non-factory type teams to
finish. Later on in the year, they entered the Watkins
Glen Six Hour and did
even better by finishing sixth over-all and, once
again, first in the under 2-liter class.
They
also did some drag racing in Oldsmobiles. In 1970, he
teamed with George Wintersteen to field a pair of
Formula A Lotus 70's. Also, there was a joint effort
at Sebring and LeMans with John Greenwood Corvettes.
Now
retired from racing, the Smothers Brothers are still
on tour. Visit
