During a big race, Mark "High Gear" Sherrod skids into a fiery collision that kills his ace mechanic, Ed Evans. Racked with guilt, Mark promises to fulfill Ed's dying wish - to send his son Jimmy to an expensive military academy. Counting on future race winnings to pay the high tuition, Mark is devastated when he discovers that the trauma of the crash has robbed him of his "racing nerve."
